During a break from filming "The Book of Eli" in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Denzel Washington got wind of a struggling Boys & Girls Club in nearby Roswell and donated $50,000 toward its efforts to stay open.
The two-time Oscar winner, also a spokesman for Boys & Girls Club of America, heard through local media reports that the club was expected to close due to financial troubles.
Washington challenged Roswell residents to match his donation. The Roswell club's director, Art Garcia, says some community groups and private donors have responded.
Eastern New Mexico Medical Center has donated $5,000 since the announcement of Washington's gift.
